PORT TOWNSEND – The newly formed Jefferson County Community Foundation has received a major gift of $50,000 to open its endowment fund. The gift was made by an anonymous donor through The Seattle Foundation.

Board president Bruce McComas calls the gift a welcome beginning for the endowment and one that he hopes will inspire other people to invest in the foundation.

“We are very gratified that this donor has placed faith in the Community Foundation by making such a generous gift,” McComas said. “As the endowment grows, we will be able support worthy projects in our area with the income from this fund.”

The gift comes as the foundation announces its founding board of directors. In addition to McComas, other board members are:

  • Carol McGough – Vice President
  • Tim Caldwell – Secretary
  • Jane Henery – Treasurer
  • Mike Henery – Director
  • Anne Schneider – Director

McComas explained that the foundation is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization supported by donors, large and small, who care about the community and its future. He said the foundation will:

* Provide a vehicle for people to become philanthropists – investing in their community in a way that works for them
* Provide a variety of planned giving options to people – enhancing the community while preserving the value of their assets
* Partner with nonprofit organizations – allowing all groups to better fulfill their missions of helping the community

Donations to the foundation can be made via cash, securities, life or remainder trusts, bequests, real estate and IRAs. People interested in supporting the foundation should contact a member of the board or Kris Mayer, philanthropic advisor, 360-379-3667.

The Jefferson County Community Foundation is a charitable organization with the mission to promote philanthropy throughout the county as an effective way to improve the quality of life now and in the future. Approval as a 501-c-3 nonprofit organization is pending from the IRS.
