Press Release Jefferson County Community Foundation Announces Fund to Help Local Children Needing Medical Care For Immediate Release: March 28, 2006 For more information, contact: A local Port Townsend family has established the first designated fund in The Jefferson County Community Foundation. The Dr. and Mrs. H. Kennith Carter Fund has been set up to help defray costs of uncompensated care for Jefferson County children receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital in Seattle. “This is our first fund of this type,” explained Foundation President Bruce McComas. “We are extremely pleased that the Carter family has chosen this way to express its commitment to families who need help covering their children’s medical expenses. This is a perfect example of how the Foundation can assist both donors and the community. We are grateful to members of the Carter family for their trust in the Foundation and their generosity to families in need.” Dr. Carter was known for his many contributions of both time and money to the community. He was named Citizen of the Year on two occasions and was a member for more than 50 years of both the Kiwanis and the Elks. One of his major contributions was the renovation of the Haller Fountain, a landmark in downtown Port Townsend. Dr. Carter, a Jefferson County dentist, also contributed to the health of the community by providing free dental care for people who needed a little extra help. A designated fund is one of several types available through the Community Foundation, McComas said. It allows donors to designate contributions to a specific community need or cause. Grants are made from the proceeds of the fund both during and after the donor’s lifetime. The first grants from the Carter fund are expected to be made in 2007. People who are interested in more information on the Community Foundation, or ways to become an investor, can contact Kris Mayer, 360-379-3667.
